The UK Public Funders of Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (TSEs) Research, which comprises five UK government agencies, have recently announced that European researchers into BSE and CJD are to receive a further £7 million ($10 million) towards the development of diagnostic tests for animal and human health. The work includes five new projects to look for surrogate markers of disease, other than the traditional abnormal prion proteins, such as higher levels of manganese in the brain.
