In 1998, Joan Somers graduated as Animal Scientist from the Wageningen Agricultural University, in the Netherlands. In 2004 he completed a PhD on Claw Disorders and Locomotor Disorders in dairy cattle. The focus of his PhD study was on epidemiological and ethological aspects of claw disorders and disturbed locomotion with special emphasises on floor type and implications for animal welfare.
